Volunteer with Children's University!

Children’s University Newcastle engages children in learning in its broadest sense. Participating children, between 7 and 12 years, are encouraged to discover new learning experiences outside of the classroom, in their local and regional community and on campus. The children build their own learning program by engaging in extracurricular activities throughout the year, recognising that learning happens everywhere and doesn’t have to be constrained by curriculum.
We partner with schools across the Hunter, Central and Mid-North Coasts; with learning destinations (libraries, art galleries, sports programs, etc.) and also colleagues at the University and community members to facilitate exciting learning opportunities for children in our communities.

Children that reach 30 hours of learning, collected in their Children's University Passports, are invited to attend a formal graduation ceremony to celebrate and acknowledge the children (and their supporters) and their commitment to learning. In 2022, we welcomed over 5000 community members across five separate ceremonies.

WHAT YOU WILL DO AS A VOLUNTEER

Children's University support and encourage children who wouldn't necessarily consider higher education. One way they do this is though Learning Lunchtimes.

What will I do?

As a volunteer, you will travel to local schools with a project officer from Children's University. At the school, you will do a short presentation and Q&A for a maximum of 30mins based on your education journey.

As a presenter, you will share your education journey or interests in a relatable way - highlighting that not all journeys to higher education are straightforward or easy.

You will need to be open to take questions and chat to primary school aged children. You will be encouraged to make your presentation as engaging and interactive as you like (feel free to bring along props or pictures)!

Volunteers would have the opportunity to go out to multiple schools throughout the program.

What kinds of things should I talk about?

You can view suggested topics/questions for presenters to cover here.

When are they run?

Learning Lunchtimes are scheduled for Term 2 (between May - June) 11.30am - 1.00pm (travel time for some schools will need to be considered).
